‘Pacific Rim 2’: Legendary and Universal Pictures Cancel Release Date; Del Torro Says It Is Not Totally Gone

By

According to previous reports, "Pacific Rim 2" was set to be released on August 4, 2017. Unfortunately through an official statement, Legendary and Universal Pictures have decided to cancel its release date indefinitely and replace the movie with "Pitch Perfect 3" instead. However, Guillermo del Toro is still positive that his movie will still push through but at a later date.

NZ Herald said the release date for "Pacific Rim 2" has been cancelled until further notice by both Legendary and Universal Pictures. The studio bosses maintained they are committed to have the sequel done but are resolute that the move was for the good of the film so that it will give viewers the "fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves." To put it simply, they wanted to make sure Guillermo Del Toro and his team work on the follow-up film to perfection. Their aim is to surpass the experience that the prequel has given to moviegoers.

According to Latin Post, "Pitch Perfect 3", which is a musical comedy film, will replace "Pacific Rim 2" on the said release date. Looking at the figures that these prequel films have generated on sales versus budget, "Pitch Perfect" made $65 million domestically and $115 globally with a budget of just $17 million while "Pacific Rim" had a budget of $190 million and raked in a total of $411 million internationally with $101 million domestic earnings included. The comedy motion picture is said to be more valuable at the moment.

Del Toro disagrees with speculations and said, "As far as I'm concerned, Pacific Rim 2 is not cancelled, just postponed. Right now, we have to put a budget and screenplay together, present it to Universal and Legendary, and they will make a decision (on a new release date)."

Latin Times reported that as of the moment, del Toro is keeping himself busy by participating in the 68th Cannes Film Festival. He is part of a panel of judges along with Ryan Gosling, spearheaded by the Coen brothers Joel and Ethan.

Until such time that Universal and Legendary Pictures will release an official statement on the release date for "Pacific Rim 2," Guillermo del Toro will just have to work with what he has at the moment to keep his hands full. "Pitch Perfect 3" has replaced "Pacific Rim 2" and is set for release on August 4, 2017.
