'Hotel Transylvania 3' is confirmed to push through. Director Genndy Tartakovsky admitted that he would not be returning to helm the sequel despite its predecessor's massive earnings at the box office during its opening weekend.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the filmmaking genius behind the first and second installments of 'Hotel Transylvania', will not be returning to direct the planned third film. The 45-year old director, producer and animator admitted that we won't be returning for another sequel since he wanted to move on to other projects. He told The Wrap, "Hotel Transylvania 3' is going to happen without me... Two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out."
Tartakovsky was originally attached to do a Popeye movie at Sony Pictures Animation but he dropped the project because of creative differences with the studio, according to Geek Snack. It remains unclear which project he would tackle next. He is best known for his work on popular animated shows on Cartoon Network including 'Dexter's Laboratory', 'Samurai Jack' and 'Star Wars: Clone Wars'.
The success of 'Hotel Transylvania 2' may have warranted a follow-up. According to Cinema Blend, the preceding film broke opening weekend records in its first three days of release and earned an impressive $48.4 million in the United States alone. Although the film gained mixed reviews, it set the record for highest grossing opening weekend for the month of September.
Stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, Kevin James, David Spade, Fran Drescher and Molly Shannon returned to the second installment to reprise their respective roles. Keegan Michael-Murray, Asher Blinkoff and Mel Brooks were among the cast's newcomers.
The first film of the animated fantasy-comedy series debuted in theatres in 2012. It earned $358 million against an $85 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Critics praised the direction and animation but complained about the script.
'Hotel Transylvania 3' is a planned sequel to the popular 3D-animated series of films revolving around a comical Count Dracula who owns and manages the titular establishment. The first film focused on his over-protective relationship with his "teenage" daughter Mavis. The second film introduced Mavis' nuclear family with the human Johnny and their hybrid child Dennis.
