'The Legend of Korra' planned Netflix spin-off series and live-action adaptation is likely cancelled. It was revealed that co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have parted ways and are currently attached on separate projects.
According to a previous report by International Business Times, Netflix was planning to take 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' spin-off series after Nickelodeon removed the animated television show out of its regular programming. Fans initially took to an online petition on Change.org requesting the on-demand media streaming provider to take the series under its wings. It was speculated that the series would later explore the lesbian relationship between characters Korra and Asami Sato.
One of the 'Avatar' series co-creators Bryan Konietzko expressed his surprise to their planned unconventional pairing's overwhelming support from fans. He said, "You pick a certain pairing, some people are going to be happy, and some people are going to be unhappy... We were just making sure we liked it, and in this case we did." DiMartino echoed his collaborator's sentiments saying, "It's been so great to see how much it connected with everyone. We knew people would hopefully enjoy it, but you never know... It's touched people on an emotional level that I didn't expect."
However, the latest report from Movie News Guide revealed that the possibilities of the plan pushing through have become rather grim. Although Netflix and Paramount Pictures showed interest in a live-action adaptation of the spin-off series, there seemed to be no further confirmation on taking the series into a whole new level.
The last 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' big-screen adaptation was released in 2010 by famed director M. Night Shyamalan. Despite earning $319 million in the box office, the film was met with generally negative reviews from audiences and fans alike.
One of the main rumors that emerged regarding the scrapping of the planned project related back to the fact that DiMartino and Konietzko have pursued different projects and are not working together anymore. According to Hypable, their creative partnership ended with the conclusion of 'The Legend of Korra' that aired on Nickelodeon from 2012 and 2014. The two admitted, "We're all tired and burnt out," the co-creators admitted. "We need to move on and take that next step."
The series centered on Korra, a reincarnation of the airbender Aang, and her adventures in a destabilized modern world. It ran for 52 episodes split in four seasons and is set to be continued in a comic book series. Its story was set 70 years after the events of the original series.
