'Mistresses' Season 4 Renewal: ABC Greenlights Drama's Fourth Run; Jennifer Esposito Won’t Return

By

The compelling stories of Karen and co. are not yet over. ABC has officially renewed "Mistresses" for a fourth season, the network has announced weeks after airing its third season finale. The soapy drama, which hails from KJ Steinberg and Rina Mimoun, will return sometime in 2016 with a total of 13 episodes. Actress Jennifer Esposito, however, has been reported to no longer be part of the new season.

According to Deadline, the pickup comes after a successful third season – establishing a consistent host of weekly followers on its Thursday 9PM berth. “Mistresses has been a modest performer in Live+Same day ratings (average of 0.8 in 18-49 for Season 3) but has been a solid DVR gainer. Its Season 3 finale, which ended on a cliffhanger, adults 18-48 rating went up +57% in Live+3,” the site wrote.

However, fans of the Jes Macallan-starred series should expect for some casting changes when it unspools the new bunch of episodes. “When the show returns in Summer 2016, however, Esposito — whose character was last seen preparing to commit suicide in her prison cell — will not return,” TV Line reported. As it turns out, Jennifer Esposito’s (Blue Bloods) one-year contract with Mistresses will no longer be extended. No word yet as to which actress will fill in for her void.

Despite of the minor setback, "Mistresses" will continue to tell stories that delve heavily on the engaging yet forbidden story arcs of Karen, April and Jos among others. “The provocative and thrilling drama will continue to focus on the scandalous lives of a sexy and sassy group of girlfriends, each on their own path to self-discovery. When it comes to love, these girlfriends find support and guidance with each other as they push the limits, test their boundaries and discover just how far they are prepared to go,” The Futon Critic has shared.

The soapy drama is expected to have a slight shift, considering Jennifer Esposito's subtraction from its cast. However, this should also provide a whole new excitement for the "Mistresses" followers as a new actress might be on the horizon to fill in the vacancy.
