'Arrow' Season 4 Premiere Recap, Update: Showrunners Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim talk mysterious death, Lian Yu flashback and more

The new season of "Arrow" opened last Wednesday, offering a new death mystery through a time jump that happened six months later. Recently, showrunners Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim spilled a few details about the mysterious event. Aptly titled “Green Arrow”, the episode also featured the island of Lian Yu via a flashback sequence.

Speaking with Variety, executive producers Wendy Mericle and Marc Guggenheim have addressed the flash-forward viewers saw in the premiere – revealing that the mysterious person on that grave will no longer be resurrected in any case.

“It’s not a fake-out. That’s not how we roll. It’ll feel organic and very earned. It’s actually very elegant,” Guggenheim said. Mericle continued, “They will stay dead. We want to bring stakes back to the show, and so we’ll be finding a way to handle the Lazarus Pit portion in Season 4 in a new, inventive way that I can’t reveal. But it’ll be cool”.

About that flashback scene where the island of Lian Yu has been revisited, Mericle offered a few interesting events that will unfold for Stephen Amell’s character. “ Oliver will meet and fall in love with Elysia Rotaru’s character on the isle. He’s also going to encounter a lot of magic and mysticism. That is going to inform what he is dealing with in Star City in the present day with Damien Darhk,” Mericle previewed in a report from TV Line.

Elsewhere, "Arrow" viewers saw a shift on Det. Lance’s loyalty in the same hour. A twist revealed that he has been teaming up with new Big Bad Damien Dahrk. However, fans should not worry about this new trajectory for the detective. Mericle told Entertainment Weekly that his motivations will be later explained in a rational sense.

"You’ll see later in the season that he did not know what he was necessarily signing up for,” Mericle revealed. “We’re going to play it really as a crisis for Lance in terms of why he chose to do it and what it means for him. He’s always been the moral center of the show and someone who has lorded his morality over Oliver. When all of this comes to a head, it’s going to be interesting to see how those two characters work it out,” she continued.

"Arrow" season 4 opened by introducing a new bunch of mysterious storylines. With these new developments, "Arrow" fans should definitely tune-in in the coming weeks to find out how these new arcs will unfold.
