With the box office success of the fifth film, Tom Cruise and Paramount have confirmed that the franchise is moving ahead with another with Mission Impossible 6 set to begin filming in summer 2016. However, latest speculations suggest it could be the last installment in the franchise. A new video was also released showing Cruise preparing for one vital scene.
Tom Cruise has confirmed that the wheels are now turning for the next sequel in the long-running franchise. According to Screenrant, the film gap between the fifth and sixth films could be the shortest in the franchise as Cruise is currently eyeing on Summer 2016 to begin filming. "We're starting to work on [Mission: Impossible 6] now. We'll probably start shooting it next summer [in 2016]", Cruise said.
Although no director has been attached to the film yet, Vice Chairman Rob Moore confirmed that the film has received the green light from Paramount. However, according to Movie News Guide, speculations suggest that the film could be the last in the franchise especially since Cruise is also not getting any younger.
It is also a widely considered possibility that the film will have another director since it has been a practice in the franchise to change directors in order for each film to be fresh and better, although it is also rumored that Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie might still be involved in other creative aspect of the film.
Aside from the intense action, the franchise has also been notable with its death-defying stunts personally performed by Cruise. Moreover, a new video was also released where Cruise was featured holding his breath for 6 minutes.
According to Entertainment Weekly, it wasn't just the helicopter scene that required preparation, but also the underwater scene in the previous film where Cruise's Ethan Hunt had to hold his breath for 3 minutes to change the security profile. However, as shown in the video, Cruise was able to hold his breath for 6 minutes.
"Tom's very comfortable underwater, and he likes to challenge the crew by staying under longer than he should on a breath-hold, get us all worried.", one of the crew said about Cruise.
Aside from Cruise who is expected to return as Ethan Hunt no other actors have been linked to the film although Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner are also likely to reprise their roles. No director and writers have been revealed for Mission Impossible 6 as of yet.
