Halle Berry’s latest TV offering about aliens will no longer continue. Last week, CBS has pulled the plug on "Extant" after two seasons of airing. The sci-fi drama, which hails from Steven Spielberg and Mickey Fisher, aired its series finale on Sept. 9th.
As reported by Deadline, the network has released a statement following the cancellation of the summer series. “CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the Extant story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant played an important role in expanding CBS’ lineup of original scripted programming in the summer”, Glenn Geller, President of CBS Entertainment said.
The sad announcement comes after Extant’s second season finale which failed to bring impressive numbers for CBS. “Extant’s two-hour finale in early September drew 4.6 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating, down 15 and 36 percent from its Season 1 closer and off nearly 60 percent from its lukewarm launch last summer,” TV line reported.
According to Variety, multiple elements affected the downward performance of the Steven Spielberg-produced series. “Season 2 took a big turn, which is most likely a cause for the series’ declining popularity this summer. Shifting from its original sci-fi nature to a more action-packed drama, the show also saw numerous casting changes, most notably replacing the male lead with Jeffrey Dean Morgan,” the publication wrote.
"Extant" launched its 13-episode first season in 2014. It followed the life of Molly Woods (Halle Berry), an astronaut who after returning from a solo mission in outer space begins experiencing a series of bizarre events. Unfortunately, the series was short-lived due to its soft performance in ratings and its shift in direction from sci-fi to a more action-packed drama.
No word yet as to whether other networks and streaming giants are considering giving "Extant" a second chance. Will you miss the show?
