CBS and actress Halle Berry have pulled the plug on the sci-fi drama series "Extant" after two seasons. In its place, the network is currently developing a legal drama to be titled Legalese with the Oscar award winning actress.
The cancellation announcement was made by Glenn Geller, President of CBS Entertainment saying, "CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the "Extant" story after last season's exciting and fitting conclusion. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series and look forward to working with her on our next project together."
Geller also acknowledged "Extant's" important role in expanding CBS' lineup of original scripted programming inthe summer and the show's popularity on Amazon Prime Video.
Berry starred in the series as Molly, an astronaut who mysteriously gets pregnant while in a year long solo mission in outer space. According to Deadline, it was a strong performer on Amazon Prime where it was streamed just days after the episodes' network broadcasts. However, the futuristic thriller couldn't attract a wider audience for a network show and struggled in the ratings.
In an effort to boost the show's ratings, significant changeswere made in Season 2 reports Master Herald. The supporting cast was revamped, including bringing in Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the new male lead but the ratings slipped even further. The two-hour season, and now series, finale wasdown 30% from the Season 1 ender.
In a report, Berry said, "I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant. This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly's journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there." She added that she is also excited to continue her relationship with CBS by producing more shows through her 606 Films production banner.
As earlier mentioned, Berry's next collaboration with CBS is Legalese reports Yibada. It centers on a bi-racial Chicago lawyer who goes to New Orleans for a case and while there finds herself partnering with a white lawyer. The series aims to expose the biases within the justice system in the area.
