‘Defiance’ Cancelled By Syfy; Can Fans Still Hope for A Season Four?

By

In case you missed, Syfy has pulled the plug on "Defiance" last week. The alien drama, created by Kevin Murphy, concluded its third and final season two months ago. No word yet on whether other networks are eyeing to reboot the scifi drama.

As reported by TV Line, Syfy has released a statement following the cancellation of the series. “Defiance was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before,” the network said. “We are incredibly proud of the work of the extraordinary cast, writers, artists and designers — and especially showrunner Kevin Murphy — who together brought the rich world of Defiance to life over its three-season arc”.

Though "Defiance" had been a strong performing TV series for the cable network, Deadline reported that they’ve decided to cancel the Kevin Murphy-produced drama to cut back on production costs.
“Defiance was a big financial investment and a content experiment for Syfy; it was developed in a partnership with Trion Worlds as a convergence of television and online gaming, the site wrote.

Later explaining that the ratings did not make an impact on Syfy’s final action, “After a solid ratings start, the show has been sliding, with its most recent third season averaging 1.1 million viewers in Live+same day, down 28% from Season 2. Still, Defiance qualified as Syfy’s most watched drama series this year, making its cancelation clearly a financial decision”.

Although this news may sound overwhelming longtime viewers, it’s still too early to tell if the show will get picked up by other networks. Should the fan base push for a stronger debate to give the series a second chance, it’s likely that it will get some attention that it deserves. For now, everything is still in limbo for "Defiance".

In the meantime, fans can still look forward to some fresh and exciting new series on tap this year. As shared by Variety, “Despite “Defiance” and “Dominion” being pulled off Syfy’s slate, the NBCUniversal cable network has a slew of high-priority projects coming up, including “The Expanse” and “Childhood’s End,” which are both set to bow on Dec. 14. Hotly anticipated series “The Magicians,” based on Lev Grossman’s novels, is set for a 2016 premiere, along with “Hunters, a thriller from “The Walking Dead’s” Gale Anne Hurd”.

"Defiance" debuted in 2013 on Syfy. It told the story of a ravaged planet Earth thirty five years in the future. Though it was a stable performer for Syfy, the cable network has decided to cancel the series to cut back on production costs. To this end, fans are still waiting for other networks to give Defiance a second shot.
