Recently, Paramount Animation and MMG revealed that a sequel movie for the "Gnomeo and Juliet" film will be entitled "Sherlock Gnomes". The studio also announced that the Oscar Award winning actor Johnny Depp will be playing the titular role.
It was confirmed in the Entertainment Weekly that the studio will use the voice of Depp, who is best known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Carribean series and in Alice in Wonderland, for the role as Sherlock Gnomes in the recently announced animated sequel film.
In 2011, the original movie "Gnomeo and Juliet" starred by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt earned a total of $194 million worldwide, according to the Variety. Both of the original casts will be reprising their roles as Gnomeo and Juliet.
Under the direction of John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda), Empire noted that Ben Zazove will be patching up the slots of the original screenwriters, Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley. Elton Johhn and David Furnish will be returning as the producers alongside MGM. However, it is still uncertain whether the new film will be having the same level of music like the original.
Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Matt Lucas and Stephen Merchant, has not yet confirmed if they will be lending their voices again for the second film. As of now, there are no other details being provided by the studios.
The "Sherlock Holmes" movie will be a spinoff of the first movie. Gnomeo and Juliet will be asking for the help of the legendary and renowned Sherlock Gnomes to solve the mystery of the descent of gnomes.
This will not be the first voice over of Depp. In fact, he was also behind the success of the box office hit "Rango" which grossed $245.7 million worldwide as well as Tim Burton's "The Corpse Bride."
Sources say the expectation for the success of the movie after the announcement of his appearance is remarkably high. The "Sherlock Holmes" movie is expected to be released in 2018.
