'The Peanuts Movie' earned $44 million on its domestic opening weekend, coming only second to the latest James Bond film 'Spectre'. No plans for a sequel have been made according to creator Charles M. Schulz' widow Jean Schulz.

Despite a successful opening weekend, the 'Peanuts Movie' may not be getting a sequel just yet. According to The Wrap, Jean Schulz, widow of the iconic creator Charles M. Schulz, isn't rushing to get a follow-up film done. 20th Century Fox expressed its desire to turn the recent release into a franchise but it currently has rights to only one film.

Mr. Schulz wasn't eager to bring his 'Peanuts' gang to the big-screens of Hollywood as he was very protective of his characters as well as his vision. Mrs. Schulz explained, "It wasn't that he didn't like the movies... he didn't think he could devote the time it would take to oversee a project and make sure it turned out the way he wanted it to." According to IGN, Mrs. Schulz said that the 'The Peanuts Movie' took eight years to make and that "we'll talk again then."

The full-length feature film debuted on November 6 and earned a total of $44 million for its domestic opening weekend. It finished second at the box office, just behind the latest James Bond film 'Spectre' that earned $70 million.

According to Comic Book Resources, the late Mr. Schulz created his beloved cartoon franchise in 1950. It began as a syndicated daily comic strip that ran in publication from 1950 to 2000. Since then, it is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential series in the history of comic strips.

Perhaps the two most popular and widely recognized characters in the series are Charlie Brown and Snoopy - a reluctant group leader and his pet beagle. Other supporting characters include Schroeder, Lucy and Linus van Pelt, Pig-Pen, Sally, Peppermint Patty, Marcie and Woodstock.

'The Peanuts Movie' is a 3D animated comedy-adventure film based on Charles M. Schulz' comic strip 'Peanuts'. It was directed by Steve Martino and written for the silver screen by Bryan Schulz, Craig Schulz and Cornelius Uliano. It had its cinematic debut on November 6, 2015 and was received with generally positive reviews.
