‘Aquaman’ Updates: Jason Momoa gets inspiration from Geoff Johns’ ‘The New 52’ ; WB hires 3rd writer for screenplay

'Aquaman' is an upcoming superhero film based on the fictional king of Atlantis. Jason Momoa, who will be in the lead role, revealed that he was reading Geoff Johns' 'The New 52' for inspiration while he prepares for his new project. Warner Bros. hires David Leslie Johnson to write the script.

According to Comic Book, Momoa revealed that he was taking inspiration from Geoff John's 'The New 52' to prepare for his role as the titular king of Atlantis. Speaking at the Dallas Comic Con, he announced that he was looking forward to playing DC's underwater superhero. He said, "So, there's not really a lot of spoilers I can give away. But the research I've done on the New 52 stuff with Geoff Johns, and just researching who he is, he's amazing."

Momoa will be playing a "darker and grittier" version of Arthur Curry a.k.a. Aquaman in the upcoming standalone film for the telepathic Atlantean ruler. The 36-year old actor is best known for his stint as Khal Drogo in HBO's popular television series 'Game of Thrones' adapted from George R. R. Martin's bestselling series of fantasy novels. He also played the title role in 2011's 'Conan the Barbarian' as well as Ronon Dex in 'Stargate Atlantis'.

According to Entertainment Weekly, his character was first introduced on-screen in 1967 in the animated series 'Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure'. In the 1970's, Aquaman's reputation as a wholesome yet comical superhero peaked and he was eventually perceived as a weaker member of the 'Super Friends'. Modern comic book depictions sought to bring him back as an edgier and more powerful superhero - one of which portrayed him as a Viking-like warrior ruler.

It was previously reported that two separate writers, Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad, have already been working on two separate drafts for the screenplay of the new 'Aquaman' live-action feature. According to Cinema Blend, Warner Bros. has brought in David Leslie Johnson to pen a third one.

It was speculated that the studio possibly found the first two drafts unsatisfactory thereby pushing the need to acquire a new writer. However, other sources believed that Johnson was hired to "streamline" the screenplay.

'Aquaman' is a science-fiction adventure slated for release on July 27, 2018. The upcoming addition to DC's shared universe will be directed by James Wan. It will feature American actor, model and filmmaker Jason Momoa in the title role.
