In a report by IGN, Gorilla Grodd was first seen in Season 1 in the episode entitled "Grodd Lives." Basically, Grodd is the temporary threat for Barry so he could motivate himself out of his down moments so that he could get back to wearing that red suit again.

Grodd, on the other hand, targeted Caitlin and brought her to his bell tower hideout. He wanted answers on how he became the way he is and Caitlin explained to him that the particle accelerator explosion is the reason behind what he is now.

Team Flash was able to lure Grodd into a breach and sent him on Earth-Two. Barry punches Grodd into the portal and lands in Gorilla City.
