Ridley Scott's ‘Prometheus 2’ Gets New ‘Alien: Covenant’ Title, Official Release Date; Sequel Officially Part of Alien Series

'Prometheus 2' is now called 'Alien: Covenant', a change from the previously announced working title 'Alien: Paradise'. Ridley Scott's sequel is now considered as part of the popular 'Alien' series. Michael Fassbender is set to return as the android David.

According to the Independent, Sir Ridley Scott recently announced that his upcoming sequel to the 2012 science fiction film has undergone yet another name change. 'Prometheus 2' was initially titled 'Alien: Paradise' but is now under the working title 'Alien: Covenant'. Along with the name change is the big reveal of the film's official logo as well as synopsis.

The upcoming film is slated for release on October 6, 2017. According to Den of Geek, 20^th Century Fox released a synopsis that stated, "Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS -- and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction.

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition."

Prior reports announced that the Prometheus series will be independent of Scott's original Alien series but now it seems that they now belong in the same universe. It was also confirmed that Fassbender's android David is set to make another appearance. It is unclear whether Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw will return for the second installment despite the fact that her character Elizabeth Shaw wasn't killed off in the preceding film.

An article from Ars Technica stated that Scott intends to begin principal photography on the next Prometheus film by February 2016. Fans are left to wonder whether the sequel will indeed follow the events of the original 2012 film or if it is intended as a prequel to the Alien franchise. One fact is certain - Prometheus now has a direct link to Alien unless Scott says otherwise.

'Prometheus 2', otherwise known as 'Alien: Covenant' is scheduled to be released on October 6, 2017. Ridley Scott will return as the sequel's director and producer. The screenplay is currently being re-written by Michael Green.
