'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he has turned in the sequel's script and budget to studio executives. He said that he has yet to hear back from them and begins his long wait for the go signal. A newly released featurette goes behind-the-scenes in the making of the visual effects of the first film.
According to We Got This Covered, director Guillermo del Toro has submitted the sequel's script and budget to studio executives. The filmmaker posted on his Twitter account, "PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling." Del Toro expressed his suspense over the possibility of a long wait.
The planned second installment in the kaiju series was taken off Universal Pictures' 2017 line-up and was delayed indefinitely. According to IGN, Del Toro clarified that 'Pacific Rim 2', otherwise known as 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' has not been dropped but is currently on hold.
The 51-year old filmmaker recently debuted his gothic romance masterpiece 'Crimson Peak' starring Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain on October 16, 2015. It remains unclear whether he would begin production on 'Pacific Rim' anytime soon.
While audiences patiently wait for more news regarding development of the sequel, a featurette from the original film was recently released. The featurette, posted on /Film, focused on behind-the-scenes work that featured visual effects done by Animation Boss. It reflected the complexity of post-production essential to creating the film's stunning imagery.
Del Toro shed some light on his involvement in the creation of the film saying, "For me, directing Pacific Rim on the animated side is as elaborate if not more than directing the live-action. I'm directing every little piece of floating debris, directing the performance of the monster. Every single piece of color or light is directed... All of them needs to be put in, and all of that gets put in with my input." The featurette delved deeper into the interaction between the kaiju and jaegers.
'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' is a planned follow-up to 2013's science-fiction monster film of the same name. Its predecessor received generally positive reviews and earned $411 million in the box office. It starred Charlie Hunnam in the lead role as Raleigh Becket, a ranger in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps and co-pilot of Gypsy Danger.
