'True Detective' Season 3 Updates: Showrunner Nic Pizzolatto renews with HBO, Next run might see a change in creative direction

By

Nic Pizzolatto of "True Detective" fame has decided to still be a part of the HBO team but the third season of his highly popular show may be up for some drastic makeovers that may or may not involve him.

According to Indiewire, Pizzolatto has forged a deal with the television conglomerate that would run until 2018. This partnership, however, does not only enclose Pizzolatto in working on the future seasons of "True Detective" but rather focus on other projects and content forms as well.

Speaking to Variety, HBO's head of programming Michael Lombardo expressed his admiration to Pizzolatti's body of work but also noted that the company is interested in pursuing more expansive and ambitious projects with him.

"I am thrilled to continue our relationship with Nic, as he is one of the most exceptionally talented writers and producers working today. I look forward to seeing where his unique creative vision will take us next."

Although Pizzolatto's renewal with HBO may mean that "True Detective" season three is most likely a go, nothing still has been finalized especially on who will be running the show.

Following the show's slight sophomore slump, HBO is very keen on considering on shaking up things in terms how season three should be run. Apparently, HBO has presented Pizzolatto with three possible scenarios that can be pursued in terms of creative control over the show.

"The network has given Pizzolatto a few options to rework the creative structure of the series; Pizzolatto working with a staff of writers, having a new showrunner come in, as well as him going it alone again," columnist Chris Longo writes for Den of Geek.

However, despite of the show's current unrest, Lombardi is still very assuring that he wants "True Detective" to go on for as long as it could.

"I'd love to do another season. I haven't asked every one of the 12 million viewers who is watching, but I think what he's doing is so much bolder, braver and satisfying that what I'm seeing in film. I'd happily be in business with him for a long time," he said.

There is no premiere date set yet for "True Detective" Season 3. But with the director already named, the exact release might be revealed soon.
