Followers of Kara Zor-El and her meta-human alter ego just got an early Christmas present from CBS. The network has ordered additional seven episodes of Supergirl, making its freshman season run for a total of 20 episodes.
The full-season order comes from Supergirl’s strong performance in ratings, kicking off with a 3.1 in rating with a total of 12.9 million viewers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oct. 26th season premiere of the series marked the most watched premiere of the fall season. Currently, it’s averaging a 2.8 rating on its Monday night timeslot.
Series lead Melissa Benoist expressed her excitement via Twitter following CBS’ announcement.
“It really is a great day when you find out you get to wear a cape/fly around/and kick some ass for a full season yay @supergirlcbs!!!!,” the actress shared on Monday.
Supergirl now joins the club of other freshman shows which scored a full season, Variety reports. This includes: Fox’s Grandfathered, ABC’s Quantico, The Muppets, and Dr. Ken among others.
Supergirl has plotted an earthquake to strike National City, catapulting Kara and her friends to rely on each other’s courage. Elsewhere, Alex’s issues of trust with Hank will come to a head when the catastrophe traps them in the DEO with a powerful alien escapee.
The episode titled “Human For A Day” will air on Dec. 7th, The Futon Critic has shared.
Supergirl follows Kara Danvers who decides to embrace her destiny to become a superhero. The titular character is also known in the DC comics lore as Superman’s cousin. Starring Benoist as the red-caped female superhero, the show also stars Chyler Leigh, Claista Flockhart and Mehcad Brooks.
It is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, whose freshman show Blindspot has received a season two renewal at NBC. Berlanti also showruns Arrow, Flash and the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow spinoff at The CW, and NBC's Debra Messing drama Mysteries of Laura.
Meanwhile, Supergirl airs every Monday at 8PM on CBS.
