Android 6.0 Marshmallow unofficially comes to Google Nexus 4 with Chroma, Pure Nexus Project Custom ROMs

Older Nexus devices including the Nexus 4 will allegedly not receive the official Android Marshmallow update. However, the Google Nexus 4 can get the unofficial Android 6.0 Marshmallow build with Chroma Custom ROM and the Pure Nexus Project Custom ROM.

Google already released the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to new phones like the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. However, Gospel Herald reported that older Android devices including the Nexus 4 will not get the latest Google OS update. The same goes to the Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 (2012).

Fortunately, unofficial Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROMs are available for the Nexus 4. Users can download either the Chroma Custom ROM or the Pure Nexus Project Custom ROM to their Nexus 4 handsets.

According to a report by Latin Post, LG and Google co-created the Chroma ROM to bring Android Marshmallow to the Nexus 4. Wallpapers and notifications can be customized by users in the Chroma ROM.

The Chroma can be downloaded and installed on the Nexus 4, though experts warn users to first make a backup of their important files and settings. File recovery tools such as ClockWorkMod and TeamWin Recovery Project can be used for backup. Additionally, installing an unofficial firmware will cancel the warranties for the phone.

Another unofficial Android Marshmallow custom ROM for the Nexus 4 is the Pure Nexus Project, said International Business Times. The Pure Nexus Project Custom ROM brings bug fixes and stability boosts. Other features include hostname customization options, functional Voice over LTE (VoLTE), additional characters and smileys, battery enhancements, and improvements on the Nexus 4 user experience.

Users need to first download the custom ROM and Google Apps files before installation. After making a backup of important data, users can proceed to install the unofficial Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware. It is advised to perform installation when the device has full battery to avoid unnecessary interruptions.
