Reddington and Liz’ mission to bring down the most wanted criminals will continue for another season. NBC has granted The Blacklist as fourth season pickup on Tuesday. Meanwhile, creator and showrunner Jon Bokenkamp has previewed the aftermath of Liz finally being arrested on the show’s midseason finale.
NBC has officially renewed The Blacklist for a fourth season, Deadline reports. The James Spader-starred thriller now joins other fall shows that were given early renewals by the peacock network. This includes: Blindspot, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.
Showrunner and creator Jon Bokenkamp released a statement following the announcement.
“We knew about that a while ago, it’s one of those things that’s hard to keep quiet. But yes, we’re renewed through the fourth season,” Bokenkamp said in a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
The executive producer also expressed his high hopes for the series, noting that they still have a “lot of story to tell”.
Although the ratings of The Blacklist slipped after moving from Monday to Thursday, it remains to be one of NBC’s asset on its primetime programming.
In other developments, Bokenkamp chatted with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the eventful midseason finale which aired last month.
The showrunner addressed Liz’ arc of finally getting caught by the FBI after living as a fugitive for a long time. Bokenkamp shared that there’s going to be a “natural conclusion” to that angle, citing that it is definitely a win for the bureau.
Despite of the victory, viewers must be warned that they’ll find Liz in “almost greater danger”.
“It’s a race against the clock for Red to enact whatever his plan is that he’s been working on for the last eight episodes. It’s time for things to fall together, and that is going to be fun,” the showrunner previewed.
As for Reddington’s next move to get Keen back, Bokenkamp allowed that Red has a great plan to make sure he gets Keen on his side. Viewers will see this unfold on the next two-parter episode which will also be about the Director.
“His plan is less about just her safety, and more about leveling the playing field. It’s a very complex, and yet simple plan that he’s been hatching since the end of season 2, quite frankly,” the showrunner hinted.
To this end, fans of Reddington may now look forward to another suspenseful turn of events next year. New episodes of The Blacklist season 3 begins on Thursday, Jan. 7th on NBC.
