The Xiaomi Mi 5 will be the first Xiaomi device to run Android Marshmallow when it is launched in January. Leaked photos show that the Mi 5 will have very thin bezels, physical home button, and fingerprint reader.
Xiaomi will make the Mi 5 run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based firmware upon its arrival. NDTV Gadgets reported that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be the first Xiaomi phone to run Marshmallow platform on top of the MIUI 7 software. Currently, Xiaomi phones like the Mi 4 and Mi Note have started receiving the Marshmallow update.
The Chinese phone manufacturer is building up suspense around the Mi 5 as it nears release. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun mentioned that the device is "worth the wait" and "very, very good".
Meanwhile, alleged leaked renders of the Mi 5 are seen online in Weibo. Tech Times said that an image posted in Xiaomi's Weibo page gave a glimpse of the much-awaited smartphone. The phone in the leaked image was not identified, though experts believe it is the Mi 5.
The leaked photo revealed that the Mi 5 will have very thin bezels on the side, giving the phone a bezel-less appearance. It will be built with a physical home button that could act as a fingerprint reader. Design-wise, the Mi 5 adopts some style features of the Xiaomi Mi Note.
Analyst Pan Jiutang said that Qualcomm's Sense ID is still not as reliable as the existing technology according to a report by Venture Capital Post. Hence, the Xiaomi Mi 5 will not integrate Qualcomm's fingerprint system but might possibly use Synaptics' ClearForce touch technology.
One possible reason for the delayed release of the Xiaomi Mi 5 is that Xiaomi will equip it with Snapdragon 820 processors. Qualcomm is yet to launch the Snapdragon 820 chipsets in January 2016.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 will launch in two variants. The more affordable variant will be priced at $311 while the more premium version will have a price of $389.
