Another hit movie is headed to the small screens as a TV adaptation of Dirty Dancing is currently being developed on ABC, the network has announced on Tuesday. Scream Queens actress, Abigail Breslin, will play the lead role.
Fans of Dirty Dancing just got exciting news. The film, which starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, will get a contemporary remake from ABC. According to Deadline, the alphabet network plans to reboot Dirty Dancing into a three-hour event with Abigail Breslin playing the role of Baby. Produced by Lionsgate TV, the new project is still awaiting an official greenlight from ABC contingent on one more casting.
The premise of the remake will follow Baby, a young and innocent woman who vacations with her family in the Catskill Mountains. Set in the 60’s, Breslin’s character will fall for the resort’s dance instructor.
The Hollywood Reporter has shared additional information about the Dirty Dancing remake. Jessica Sharzer will pen the screenplay and will be produced by Allison Shearmur Productions alongside Eleanor Bergstein – who also wrote the script for the original film. Its musical scoring will be lead by Adam Anders and Peer Astrom. Andy Blankenbuehler has been tapped to choreograph the dance sequences. The entire production, designed by Stephen Altman, will be directed by Wayne Blair.
Apart from FOX’s Scream Queens, Breslin’s other credits include: Little Miss Sunshine, The Call and Zombieland – E! Online has learned.
ABC has yet to announce the official production period and geographical setting of the Dirty Dancing remake. No word yet on who will be playing Breslin’s love interest on the show, which was formerly played by Patrick Swayze in the 1987 film.
In recent months, a number of musical shows have also been adapted for TV by other networks. NBC aired a successful run of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz. FOX, on the other hand, is set to debut Grease: Live in January 2016.
