Google released the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update containing December security patches for Android devices. The latest Marshmallow update fixes a major security vulnerability that could allow hackers to remotely execute code on affected devices.

The latest iteration to the Android Marshmallow firmware has started to roll out. The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update began to launch on Android One and Nexus devices. The update brings December security bug fixes as well as new sets of emojis for Android devices.

According to a report by Yibada, the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update addresses security issues that can be exploited by hackers in Android. The report added that Google is committed to regularly roll out updates to protect Android devices from malicious software attacks.

The latest Marshmallow update also addressed a serious security vulnerability reported earlier this year. As per NDTV Gadgets, the issue could allow hackers to remotely execute code on affected devices through email, web surfing, and even MMS.

"Partners were notified about and provided updates for these issues on November 2, 2015 or earlier," said Google. "Source code patches for these issues will be released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository over the next 48 hours."

The Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update also featured some enhancements to improve user interface and navigation on tablets. New "back" and "home" buttons were added and placed on the left and right sides of the screen. The "Until Next Alarm" setting was also added in the Do Not Disturb mode. Previously, Google removed this feature in Android 6.0 version.

Trusted Reviews reported that the Android 6.0.1 update features a new camera shortcut for the Nexus 6, Nexus 5, and Google's Nexus tablets. The camera can be accessed by double-tapping the power button.

Google advised users to update to the latest Marshmallow OS version. Being up to date with the latest Android OS will make devices less vulnerable to critical software attacks.
