Although True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato has signed a deal with HBO through 2018, it would seem that Cary Fukunaga is still out of the picture when it comes to making a third installment for the controversial series. Meanwhile, Fukunaga is working on a feature film with highly-acclaimed actor Idris Elba. Will Elba be included in True Detective should Fukunaga changes his mind? Also, Steve Golin spill some details on season 2 flop.
According to Digital Spy, Cary Fukunaga has ruled out returning to True Detective for a possible third installment.
"That's far too big of a commitment. After season one was done, I was very happy to move on, back to feature film and a completely different world to immerse myself in. And whatever I do next, hopefully, will feel just as different as anything I've ever done before," he said in an interview.
Fukunaga and writer-creator Nic Pizzolatto worked together for season one of the Emmy winning series. However, the two seemed to have a falling out with season 2. Pizzolatto even allegedly included a character in one of the episodes depicting Fukunaga, although he stressed that it was never an intention.
Fukunaga revealed that he had never planned on doing season two and that he has not even seen it yet. He is currently filming a Netflix original film "Beasts of No Nation" which stars Idris Elba. The film is recently nominated in the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Both Fukunaga and Elba built a special bond while making the film and many speculate that should Fukunaga change his mind on True Detective, he might bring Elba on board.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Elba revealed how it was working with Fukunaga.
"Cary Fukunaga is a tour de force. He's very, very smart, very compassionate, collaborative. He gave me a lot of sort of license to build my character, and he's one of the best directors in the world and a future star," he said.
Elba also agreed with the reporter when told that it would be pretty cool to have him on True Detective with Cary back.
Meanwhile, Steve Golin, head of Anonymous Content who produce True Detective, reveals in an interview with Movie Pilot why season 2 of the show became unsuccessful.
"Look, I think that the scripts weren't as good, and Nic (Pizzolatto) felt like he really didn't want to go with the one-director plan, which was something that I think really added an extra value to it... sometimes you have a good [season], sometimes you don't. But Nic is wildly talented, but I think that this one just wasn't as good ... Now we're gonna do season 3 and I think that one will be better," Golin said.
There is no official confirmation yet on True Detective season 3 and fans should have to wait a bit longer for news and updates of the show.
