'The Legend of Zelda' creator Takashi Tesuka admitted that it would be interesting to recreate the main protagonist Link as a female character for a live-action adaptation. Fan favorites include actresses Emma Watson and Elizabeth Olsen.
According to The Independent, general manager and co-creator of the popular Nintendo video game series considered the possibility of reimagining Link as a "boyish" woman should a full feature film push through. He said, "It would very fun and awesome if Link was played by a female actress - a boyish female actress."
In the original action-adventure video game, the plot revolves around a playable male protagonist named Link who journeys to collect eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom to rescue Princess Zelda.
Throughout the series, Link has been depicted as several manifestations of the main protagonist beginning from a child, to a teenager, and finally as a full-grown adult of the Hylian race. His main goal is to defeat the evil Ganon and liberate Princess Zelda. To be able to do this, he must procure several weapons including the Master Sword as well as Light Arrows.
Link has always been a popular choice for female cosplayers through the years, according to co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto during an interview with MTV. He said, "This is something I never imagined because Link is very different to how a Japanese person looks... At the Japanese Expo I attended, there were so many people in cosplay who looked very good."
An article by Forbes suggested several actresses who could play the role of Link for a live-action adaptation of 'The Legend of Zelda'. These include western talents such as Emma Watson, Elizabeth Olsen, Annasophia Robb and even Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence. Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi of 'Pacific Rim' fame has also been considered.
'The Legend of Zelda' is a planned live-action adaptation of the epic fantasy video game series by Nintendo. No official news has been announced of its confirmation.
The popular video game is set in the fictional world of Hyrule and follows a playable character named Link. The first ever release in the series made its way to Nintendo's Family Computer Disk System in 1986. Since then, the game has spawned several sequels as well as spin-offs and is considered one of pop culture's most famous video games of all time.
