Google Nexus 4 smartphones now have the chance to get the Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade through a custom ROM. The upgrade will bring in custom features that do not go far from the official build.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade is now available to older Google Nexus 4 devices using two different unofficial ROMS crafted by developers, Aldrin Holmes and Dmitry Grinberg. The upgrade brings native features that competes with the official software.
In October 2015, the devices' successors have already been updated to the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow and are now being updated to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. This includes Nexus 5 (2013), Nexus 5X, (2015), Nexus 6 (2016), Nexus 6P (2015), Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9 (2014).
Before downloading the new software, users are warned to save necessary data in an external device since the installation will require the complete wipeout of data. Take note to enable USB debugging option on the device.
Google Nexus 4 must be rooted, unlocked and installed with a recovery tool. Charge up phone to at least 40 percent to prevent power interruption.
To begin the installation, here's a go-to process:
1. Transfer the TWRP file to the phone.
2. Install it.
3. Shut down the phone.
4. Switch to Recovery mode by simultaneously press holding volume up and down and power button.
5. After the TWP user interface pops up, select Wipe then Factory Reset.
6. Transfer ROM-Google Apps to the device.
7. Restart to launch Recovery mode again.
8. Wait for the entire process to finish.
Meanwhile, the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow will bring in features and enhancements in aspects of contextual assistance, battery, Android Runtime (ART), system usability, connectivity, productivity, storage, device setup and migration, media, and many more.
Doze, a power saving feature, is one of the most popular additions to Marshmallow. When phone is idle, Doze will automatically put the device into a sleep state to expand standby battery life.
