'The Good Wife' Season 7 Spoilers: Showrunners talk impact of Eli’s confession; Series plots high-risk political move for Peter

By

The Good Wife co-showrunners Robert and Michelle King hashed out the impact of Eli’s confession to Alicia in a post-mortem interview. Meanwhile, the legal drama's seventh season has plotted a high-risk political endeavor for Chris Noth’s Peter.

Last Sunday’s episode of The Good Wife found Eli Gold finally confessing to Alicia about deleting a significant voicemail message of Will – an emotional message declaring his love for the strategic lawyer.

Co-creators Robert King and Michelle King addressed the timing of this confession in an interview, citing a few reasons why the writers decided to revisit this secret on the legal drama’s seventh (and possibly final) season. “We like that problems don’t really go away on the show — just as they don’t go away in life. It makes it feel like the characters have lives beyond the confines of seasonal arcs and denouements,” they told Entertainment Weekly.

The Kings also note that they wanted the viewers to forget about an event from the past so an element of surprise will be expected when they resurface. Lastly, they wanted the first and seventh cycle to “feel like they’re coming full circle”.

As to how this will impact Alicia’s views towards her relationship with Will, the EP revealed that it will reopen a wound for her. They noted that the death of someone we love never really fades and Alicia will be mirroring this as the legal drama moves forward. “If we could just go back and choose the left path instead of the right, everything would be different: Will would be alive, Alicia would be living a happy and passionate life with him, and everything would be great,” the showrunners explained.

As to whether Josh Charles will be returning on The Good Wife via flashbacks, EP Robert King confirmed via TV Line that fans will not be seeing him again, unfortunately.

Turning to Eli Gold, Robert explained that one of the reasons he came clean just now is because he feels guilty for manipulating Alicia’s feelings. In the past with Will, and now with Jason Crouse.
“He cares for Alicia now, and wants her to be happy. He confesses in order to relieve his guilt, but also to push Alicia to not give up her chance at happiness”.

As The Good Wife moves forward, viewers will find Peter attempting a risky political strategy to gain votes for his presidential bid. This storyline, according to The Futon Critic, will unfold on the show’s upcoming Jan. 10th installment.

It will be an interesting back half run of The Good Wife following this confession of Eli. Whether or not Alicia will cut his friendship with Peter’s right hand man is yet to be determined; but one thing’s for sure: she’s definitely not trusting him ever again.
