WGN has announced the official premiere date of Underground, while also releasing two new sneak peeks this week. The upcoming one hour drama, starring Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton), hails from Misha Green (Sons of Anarchy), John Legend and Joe Pokaski (Daredevil).
As reported by TV Line, Underground will debut on our small screens on Wednesday, March 9th. Its freshman season will run for a total of 10 episodes. The network also released two new compelling trailers to whet the fans’ appetite for its official premiere.
The brief sneak peeks titled “The Plan” and “Wanted” featured Kanye West’s song, “Black Skinhead”. According to Collider, this track was also famously played in the trailers of Leonardo DeCaprio’s Wolf of Wall Street. Last February, West was originally eyed to supervise the overall music for Underground, but creator/showrunner John Legend replaced him in July.
The story of Underground follows a group of plantation slaves who team up to fight for their freedom, their families and their future. The 10-hour long drama will feature their attempt at the greatest escape in history despite the high stakes of being caught.
Also joining WGN’s riveting new series are: Jurnee Smolett-Bell (True Blood), Alano Miller (Jane the Virgin), Jessica de Gouw (Arrow) among others.
Aldis Hodge, meanwhile, received recognition for the movie – Straight Outta Compton – at the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards. Variety reported that the hit film’s cast members are in the running for Best Acting Ensemble. Other nominees in the same category include: The Big Shirt, The Hateful Eight, Spotlight and Trumbo.
The awarding ceremony will be hosted by TJ Miller and will air on Jan. 17 at A&E, Lifetime and LMN.
Underground is shaping up to be one of 2016’s breakout TV series. The latest trailers present some gritty performances by the cast and an inviting premise TV viewers will definitely tune-in for.
