A few weeks ago, Chapel Schmucker revealed some sad news on TLC's "Return to Amish." Schmucker, who had previously battled with cancer, announced that her cancer had returned. Naturally, this will shape the future course of "Return to Amish" for the foreseeable future.
But it's also had a curious effect on the show's fans.
First, a GoFundMe campaign was created for Schmucker, to raise the funds needed to pay for her cancer treatments (GoFundMe being another crowdfunding site like Kickstarter or Indiegogo). The campaign, with a goal of five thousand dollars, has raised more than two thousand already.
But some fans weren't quite convinced that it was really Schmucker (or some member of her family) behind the campaign, and Schmucker's Facebook page was quickly swamped with "Return to Amish" fans that questioned the GoFundMe's legitimacy.
This prompted Schmucker to release a new video on her Facebook, proving once and for all that the GoFundMe campaign is a real funding drive for real cancer treatments.
Being accused of faking cancer (or, at least, faking a drive for cancer funds) did not sit particularly well with other members of the "Breaking Amish" cast. In another post to Facebook, Schmucker's co-star Sabrina High responded with a lengthy retort:
"This is for all who watch the show... apparently people are saying that since the show is 'fake' they are daring to voice their concerns that my friend Chapel is just pretending to have stage 4 cancer. If you think that that is a legit concern, you need your head examined.... If you wanna judge somebody with cancer then I honestly hope someday you get to experience it for yourself firsthand and then maybe you'll realize what a complete jerk you were. Chapel is a beautiful, strong, intelligent soul, and she is a ray of sunshine wherever she goes. She needs all the support she can get right now."
As far as we can tell, this should put a damper on the rumors that Schmucker was faking it.
