"Mortal Kombat X" News: Release Date in 2015 Confirmed, New Storyline Will include Decades of Characters [Video]

By

The "Mortal Kombat" series had been failing for years, delivering sequels met only with disappointment, and not nearly living up to the stellar reputation of the original "Mortal Kombat" games. But the 2011 reboot of "Mortal Kombat" was the kick this franchise needed, and new the series is attracting all kinds of attention and all kinds of hype.

That hype has now extended to the next game in the series, entitled "Mortal Kombat 10." Recently, over Twitter, new developments have just come out about the upcoming fighting game. First, the official name of the game was announced through "Mortal Kombat" designer Ed Boon's Twitter (and not by a press release, as is usually standard) to be "Mortal Kombat X."

This is a slight alteration from the ninth installment in the series, which was simply entitled "Mortal Kombat." Despite NetherRealm Studios dropping the numbers for a single game, it seems they're back in the same pattern for the tenth version.

Now, according to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Twitter account, the game is officially set for a 2015 release, and will be appearing on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. No word yet about a Wii U or an OS X release, but these two platforms are usually the ones that get short shrift from the gaming world.

Along with the release date news, Breathecast has the first story details on the upcoming game. According to their findings, "Mortal Kombat X" will feature a story that stretches over a period of twenty-five years. This will allow NetherRealm to include a wider range of characters from a variety of Mortal Kombat games, thus allowing the players more flexibility in choosing characters, and an opportunity to include all kinds of past fan-favorites.

Confirmed characters from previous games include Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero.
