'Arrow' Season 3 Premiere: Did Ra's al Ghul kill Sara Lance? The Canary shocks fans with her brutal death

By

The CW's superhero series premiere ended in an unexpected twist that no one predicted: Sara Lance's (Caity Lotz) death. In "The Calm" episode, Buzzfeed said that Sara aka The Canary was seen being shot with multiple arrows, sending her flying off a rooftop down to her death. Sara landed at the precise moment on the pavement where her sister Laurel (Katie Cassidy) is standing nearby. Laurel then rushes to her sister, whose mask was removed because of her landing on her back on a dumpster before hitting the ground. The camera pans back to a visibly grieving Laurel, holding her sister as she rocks back and forth in tears.

Producer Marc Guggenheim told the Hollywood Reporter that the decision to kill off a character was brutal to the team. But Guggenheim said that killing off Sara is an important decision in order for the story to progress. He added, ""Every time we kill off a character on the show, it's always incredibly hard. We're not Game of Thrones. We're not Sons of Anarchy. It's really, really, really difficult. "(But by removing Sara from the equation,) the story implications ... are so far-reaching for the show and affect all of the characters. It really kicks off a mystery that will drive us for at least the first half of the year."

It remains to be clear whether Ra's al Ghul was the one who delivered the fatal arrows or if he had a hand in the killing of Sara. Regardless, fans of the villain seen in the "Batman" universe will expect him to introduce himself in the fourth episode, IGN said. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly, "A lot of the themes for Oliver's (Stephen Amell) journey that we were discussing this season are wrapped up in identity. Can he be both Oliver Queen and the Arrow? A lot of that turned out to get tied up with what we thought of Ra's al Ghul and who he was and where he came from and what his ultimate goals are. All of those things lined up perfectly."
