Swing-man Corey Brewer has been a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor for the Timberwolves, but he may be on his way out of Minnesota before the February trade deadline this season.
A report by Marc Stein of ESPN reveals that the Wolves are shopping Brewer this season and the Houston Rockets and the Cleveland Cavaliers are the top suitors. Stein added some details on the possible trade:
Both Cleveland and Houston possess a trade exception large enough to absorb Brewer's $4.7 million salary, meaning that both teams would likely be able to acquire Brewer by merely surrendering future draft compensation and without giving up any key players.
But aside from Brewer's well chronicled relationship with former teammate Kevin Love who was the perfect outlet passer for the 28-year-old swing-man in transition last season when Love was still with Minnesota, the Cavs look like the perfect trade destination for Brewer simply because of the dire need that he would fill in:
The Cavs are unquestionably interested in a deal for Timberwolves forward Corey Brewer, as reported Sunday by ESPN. One team official told FOX Sports Ohio that Brewer would be the perfect fit. He defends wings, doesn't need the ball, and would allow Marion to move back to his role as James' backup at small forward. And yes, keep the often shot-happy Waiters coming off the bench and scoring points -- which is how the Cavs' really like him, per Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio
And while the Rockets have as much chance in landing Brewer as the Cavs, it doesn't make sense for Houston to add a defensive wing in their roster because they already have one in Trevor Ariza after they signed him in the offseason. What the Rockets do need is another big who can help ease Dwight Howard's burden down according to Ethan Rothstein of SB Nation:
You know what positions the Rockets need better players at? Power forward and center? You know what Corey Brewer isn't? A power forward or center... The only way this would make sense for the Rockets is if they got a big along with Brewer, and if they just wanted him to stop becoming James Worthy when he played against them.
With that being said, we may just be seeing Corey Brewer in a Cavaliers jersey anytime soon, although don't be surprised if he ends up in Houston.
