Spider-Man has an unfortunate history of subpar movies.
The current "Amazing Spider-Man" series is no great shakes, but we're thinking of Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3," the 2007 film that crammed three villains into a single film and badly misused all of them (Harry Osborne on an evil flying surfboard, Sandman killing Uncle Ben, Venom looking all shrimpy and getting no screen time).
Also, there's the whole goth Peter Parker thing, which is better left forgotten.
Well, it turns out that the film's director, Sam Raimi, isn't a particularly big fan of the film either. In a Nerdist podcast (via Pajiba), he admitted he holds no warm feelings for his final "Spider-Man" film.
"It's a movie that just didn't work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn't really believe in all the characters, so that couldn't be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn't love something, it's wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it. I think [raising the stakes after Spider-Man 2] was the thinking going into it, and I think that's what doomed us. I should've just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar ..."
Later, when asked, Raimi characterized the film as "awful," and added that he'd love the chance to remake the movie, but "[he] wouldn't' make that movie."
Interestingly enough, Raimi admitted he's never seen Marc Webb's "Amazing Spider-Man" films either- admitting to The Huffington Post that he can't build up the courage to see a reboot of his own franchise.
There's also been rumors that Raimi might have been courted back to the franchise- his name was thrown around in emails found in the Sony hacking scandal. And if that's the case, he might finally have the chance to right his old "Spider-Man 3" wrongs.
Check back soon for the latest on the "Spider-Man" franchise.
