‘Resident Evil 5’ PS3, Xbox 360, PC Update: Capcom leaves GFWL for Streamworks; ‘Gold Edition’ brings new chapters for ‘RE5’

"Resident Evil 5" made a move to Steamworks from Games for Windows Live. Add to that, Capcom had decided to move the game's DLC to Steamworks, which would also be made available for non-Games for Windows Live subscribers.

Capcom made an announcement to its "Resident Evil" gamers on its Capcom Unity blog, and pointed out that they could get a free copy of "RE5" in Steamworks, and then buy the "Gold Edition" content. Capcom explained that "[gamers who] own regular [Resident Evil 5] through either Steam or a boxed retail Games For Windows Live, [they] can acquire a free Steamworks copy and then purchase the new Gold Edition content for US$14.99." Capcom added however, that, "[gamers who] don't own 'RE5' in any form, [they] can pick up the entire game at a discount price for a limited time." Capcom would release the discounted "Resident Evil 5" at US$6.80, while the discounted "Gold Edition" at US$20.99.

The "Resident Evil 5" "Gold Edition" would highlight two new chapters to "Resident Evil 5." Capcom said that "[the chapter] 'Lost in Nightmares' takes place prior to 'RE5,' with Chris and Jill on a mission to apprehend Umbrella founder Oswald Spencer." Meanwhile they added that the other chapter, "Desperate Escape," "[would] take place near the end of [Resident Evil 5], teaming Jill with BSAA agent Josh Stone."

Capcom also clarified some points regarding the switch from Games for Windows Live to Steamworks. These included the use of the GFWL activation code to redeem a free copy of the game in Steamworks. Add to that, gamers who bought the "Resident Evil 5" from Steam or Steam distributors would have their copies automatically upgraded to the full Steamworks 'RE5' edition. However, Capcom said that they would only maintain a few applicable Games for Windows Live titles following the move to Steamworks and would not be able to accommodate a Steamworks transfer for GFWL users, since "there [was] no authentication option available."

On the other hand, speculation had been circulating that Capcom would be releasing a new "Resident Evil" game subsequent to "Resident Evil 5" "Gold Edition's" launch. SuperData revealed that Capcom had been working on "Resident Evil 7," which might be released by fall of 2015, based on a report from Game Rant.

Add to that, Capcom had been receiving mixed reviews since the launch of "Resident Evil 6" and "Resident Evil: Revelations 2," in terms of graphic quality and its gameplay. With the recent activity surrounding the "Resident Evil" franchise, it seemed that Capcom had been trying to bring back the followership of the "Resident Evil" by reworking their strategy in the more than a decade old horror survival game.
