'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Update: Who are the Sand Snakes?

By

The countdown to the premiere of the first episode of 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 is ongoing, and though fans are already eagerly waiting to once again see this small screen adaptation of George R. R. Martin's modern fantasy epic, newer updates regarding the upcoming season are going to draw its viewers even closer.

It was recently reported by the Huffington Post that new characters are going to be introduced in season 5 of 'Game of Thrones,' the most notable being the famous "Sand Snakes," in which actresses Jessica Henwick (who will portray Nymeria Sand) and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Tyene Sand) have been cast.

So who are the Sand Snakes? According to the novels, the Sand Snakes are the daughters of Oberyn Martell and Ellaria Sand, who are out to avenge their father after dying a brutal death in a duel in the previous season. Their mother was an Eastern noblewoman who perished in battle. When Henwick was interviewed by The Telegraph about her character, she described how Nymeria is the "most strategic" of the three sisters, and that her character's signature weapon is a whip, which embodies Nymeria's reliance on tactic rather than brute force.

Additionally, Henwick revealed in the interview how both Nymeria and Tyene harbor hatred towards the Lannister family after learning of how much suffering their relatives went through under these nobles. While Tyene would very much like to strike there and then, Nymeria would rather take their time and assess the situation before taking any action.

The Huffington Post also reported that HBO also released two other behind-the-scenes videos for the upcoming season, where fans will get to see newer sets, a fight secene in the infamous Daznak's Pit, and a stronger, darker Sansa Stark.

'Game of Thrones' Season 5 returns to HBO on April 12.
