The Galaxy Note 5 may not use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820, but instead use the company's MDM9x45 category 10 LTE-Advanced modem, which has a 450MBps speed. Further, it was confirmed that Galaxy Note 5 devices will have curved dual-edge screens upon release.
In an interview with Reuters, President and CEO JK Shin said Samsung chose to use their own chips to "make our products competitive" instead of using Qualcomm microprocessors. However, Shin added that "we may very well end up using products from Qualcomm again in the next Galaxy phone."
This led to speculations that the "next Galaxy phone" is "widely believed to be the Galaxy Note 5." A report noted Samsung's release pattern that the company launches its Galaxy S carriers in the spring, with the Galaxy Note during the fall. Further, reports expect that powerful Qualcomm chips could possibly be included in the Galaxy Note 5 upon its release.
However, Qualcomm has also its own release pattern. When the company announced the Snapdragon 810 in 2014, the chip sampling began in September. Then the chip would then be included in commercially available devices during the first half of 2015. Currently, the Snapdragon 810 is inside the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, LG G Flex 2, and the HTC One M9. GSMArena reportedly said that both the Note Pro and G Flex 2 are available on February 2015.
"So, if Qualcomm began sampling the 810 in September 2014, and the first devices based on the chip were commercially available in February 2015, this implies a roughly four month interval between sampling availability and commercial launches based on those chips. This means even if Qualcomm is sampling the Snapdragon 820 come July 1, it probably wouldn't be reasonable to expect the chip inside of a commercially available device until the November timeframe. Given the traditional September launch of the Galaxy Note line, it appears unlikely the Note 5 will feature the Snapdragon 820," a report concluded.
This led to the assumption that the Galaxy Note 5 won't be having the Snapdragon 820. The question is, "What Qualcomm product will Samsung be using in the 'next Galaxy phone'?" The Wall Street Journal reportedly said that Qualcomm has "won the modem spot in the Galaxy S6 sold on some carriers", and possibly have also won the "modem spot in the Note 5." Qualcomm would then be using its MDM9x45 category 10 LTE-Advanced modem. This said modem is capabale of running up to 450 Mbps/100 Mbps.
Meanwhile, reports have confirmed that the Galaxy Note 5 will come out with a curved dual-edge screen, similar to the Galaxy S6 Edge. Further, rumors are pointing to a 4K display resolution, more powerful Exynos chip, and a 4 GB of RAM.
