The birth of the Witcher came under the shadow of communism in war-ravaged Poland. Marcin Iwinski, founder of CD Projekt Red said to Gamespot as he reminisce when he and a group of friends came together and founded the company. Iwinski said that they were probably the first to import games on CD in Poland, which is where their company, CD Projekt Red got its name.
At that time, Poland was riddled with piracy as western games are copied illegally even after the fall of communism. Afterwards, the mentality of "not spending for games" because one can copy it from a friend prevailed rampantly that Iwinski and his associates had to convince consumers to buy games.
"We are educating people that buying games make sense and has value." Iwinski said,
At first, Iwinski said that the value consumers will get was in a physical form. They added freebies inside their games boxes and promoted those free items people will get when buying their games. This environment shaped how Iwinski and everyone in CD Projekt Red think when marketing their future games.
DLC for the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is free.
As they did during those early days, CD Projekt Red will also add "freebies" for the Witcher 3: Wild hunt and not only those included in the box, but DLCs will be free.
"If its hair style, weapon, armor, of course armor maybe, this should be free. This is our way of saying thank you to the gamers for buying our games."
Iwinski continued, "Because honestly speaking, what does it cost us to make a set of armors, several hours maybe one, two, three people? Considering the scale of the game, considering the investment people will be taking in the game, spending hours, hey let's make it fun for them... I would like to get stuff for free..."
This shows how Iwinski treat their fans. The provide value for their fans as they value them as well. It is for this reason why the DLCs for the Witcher 3 wild hunt will be free. The game will go live on May 19, 2015 for the PC, PS4 and Xbox one at 1:00am CET.
