It looks like the Marvel-Sony 'Spider-Man' reboot has finally found the right actor to play the friendly neighborhood webcrawler. According to reports from various media sites, the list of candidates to play Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man has been narrowed down to two - Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland.
According to a Twitter post last week by Devin Faraci, a reporter for Badass Digest, both Holland and Butterfield were being eyed by Marvel and Sony Studios to become the next webhead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While both studios have not released any confirmation regarding the matter, the report does make sense given that both actors are 18 years old, which ideally fits their requirement of a teenage Peter Parker.
Once an official announcement is made, this will be the first time that an actor who is cast as Peter Parker is still in his teenage years. Fans of the film franchise would remember that the previous actors who played Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, were in their 20s with Maguire being 25 and Garfield being 26 during their castings.
So who are these two young actors who are being eyed to become the next Spidey?
Between the two actors, Asa Butterfield is better known and could be considered to have more "blockbuster" experience due to the films that he has been in - 'Hugo,' 'Nanny McPhee Returns,' and the critically acclaimed 'Ender's Game.' Tom Holland, on the other hand, has played roles in lesser known films such as 'How I Live Now,' but his spectacular performance in 'The Impossible' showcases an acting potential that could land him the superhero role.
The Marvel-Sony 'Spider-Man' reboot is scheduled to hit theaters in 2017, but rumors indicate that Spidey may appear in next year's 'Captain America: Civil War,' which will premiere on May 6, 2016.
