"Empire" is gearing up for season two this fall following its record-breaking season one finale. While some fans worry that the show may lose its charm, Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal Lyon on the Fox family drama series revealed that season 2 will surpass season 1 and will make it "look like 'The Brady Brunch.'" This article contains spoilers for "Empire" season 2. Read on to learn more about this story.
"Empire" fans are already looking forward to season 2 following an interesting turn of events, as Lucious (Terrence Howard) is put behind bars and his son, Jamal takes the center stage. Like in most sequels - be it in the movies or in television, to rival or to surpass the previous season gives an added pressure to its cast and crew.
Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal Lyon, confidently expressed his thoughts on the next season and said that season 2 will make season 1 "look like 'The Brady Brunch.'" While Smollett was mum on details of what fans can expect from "Empire" in season 2, the 31-year-old actor admitted that he is very much alike his character, Jamal Lyon.
"We connect on so many levels. I know we would absolutely be best friends," Smollett said.
Now that his character, Jamal, will be taking the Lyon empire as Lucious remains behind bars, Smollett revealed that Jamal will be going through a big transition. Smollett recounted the time when Jamal outwardly expressed that he did not want to take the center stage of the Lyon empire; however, Jamal will begin to realize that the things he previously did not want are actually those that he likes.
Meanwhile, Lee Daniels' hip hop drama will return for season two with 18 episodes, which will be split into two parts to give way to a midseason finale. "Empire" will also air in its usual airdate, as a way to "reward fans" for their overwhelming support in season one.
