Konami Pursues the Mobile Platform, CEO Hints Metal Gear Solid Mobile Game

By

Konami's CEO Hideki Hayakawa declares that they are pursuing mobile games "aggressively". He said that their focus for future and present projects are going to be released in mobile platforms according to an interview with the CEO with Nikkei Trendy Net.

Hideki Hayakawa also stated that the pay-as-you-play model of the games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven must move from selling "items" to selling "features." He also added that the games has spread into a number of platforms, however, for him and Konami, the platform that is closest to them is mobile. Konami believes that the future of gaming is in mobile.

This comes after the backlash Konami received for removing Hideo Kojima from the Metal Gear branding after the latter left the company. Konami also cancelled the development of Silent Hills, a high profile title starring Norman Reedus and to be directed by Guillermo del Toro, also with involvement with Hideo Kojima. Silent Hills' playable teaser aptly named P.T. was also removed from the PlayStation store. This could mean that Konami is wiping the clean slate with removing all of its traces from the video game business.

Hideki Hayakawa was very positive about Metal Gear Solid V and Winning Eleven doing well outside of Japan when they get relesed and it is expected that these titles will possibly have mobile iterations. Konami also absorbed Hudson Soft a few years ago and it will not be a surprise to see the properties of Hudson Soft like Bomberman, Adventure Island, and Bloody Roar to also be resurrected in smartphones.

He also added that multiplatform games have no point in dividing the market into categories anymore as mobile will take the "new role" in linking the gaming industry to the masses.

Konami is a game publisher and developer known for the Metal Gear and Silent Hill franchises. Konami is not the first Japanese game developer to pursue the mobile platform. Square-Enix, another well-known Japanese game developer, are also taking on more mobile projects side-by-side their traditional video games.
