It's a common knowledge that Robert Downey Jr, best known for his Tony Stark portrayal, has extended his contract with Marvel for the upcoming films of The Avengers installment and cameos on several ongoing Marvel hero stand-alones such as Thor and Captain America. That has left many fans wondering, would he be also starring the next movie of his own stand-alone Iron Man, which has just ended with the third last May 2013.
It's a long enduring debate whether Iron Man 4 would continue the adventure, of course with Downey starring in it. He's the major reason why fans follow the movies, and make it one of the best blockbusters of Marvel. Thor and Captain America couldn't even make it to its gross line.
In the past year, while the hype of the anticipation is in its full height, Downey made comments on whether Iron Man 4 will truly happen. On an interview with David Letterman, he said that the movie will no longer take place, stating that Marvel hasn't laid out any plans to it yet.
"Just between us, no [Iron Man 4 is not happening]," Downey said. "But I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen."
However, he also backtracked by answering in an interview with Ellen Degeneres that "yes", it's going to happen.
While Downey is getting a little tricky and teasy about the next Iron Man film, and enjoying the attention he's getting from his fans, it seems that Iron Man 4 really isn't an ideal move for Marvel, if they do actually do it.
Firstly, Marvel is doing really good with their current movies, The Avengers and Captain America. These are the movies with Downey in it playing Tony Stark, and that's where their contract with Downey is limited. Furthermore, Marvel has really, really big plans. They have had Antman, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Captain America 3, Doctor Strange, Thor 3, and The Avengers 3. It's very unlikely that Iron Man 4 would fit into this line of projects in such short a length of time.
More so, the plot for the Iron Man franchise has come to its rigid ultimate. If you've seen the 3rd movie, it's clear that Tony Stark had already detached the shrapnel that connects him with the suit via surgery. He just put down his metallic suit to rest forever. If another movie gets in, the plot would restart and we are all just going to get back to that part where Tony Stark rebuilt all his protocols. It's just a constant Iron Man trouble machine hoopla cycle.
Finally, most movie franchises are ideally limited only to three movies. The Iron Man trilogy had made considerable amount of money, unlike Thor and Captain America. If another one shoots in for Iron Man, it may be that the quality of the movie will be reduced to the likes of the two, even when Downey is in it.
Though no Iron Man is coming out, Downey will still appear in most Marvel movies. And if you are a die-hard fan of Downy, then you shouldn't worry about Iron Man 4. He's getting quite the spotlight still on most of the upcoming movie plans.
Do you agree about having Iron Man 4, or just let other Marvel films show Iron Man doing his work?
