"Mulan" Live-Action Movie Is Expected To Exceed The Blockbuster "Cinderella"; Fans Are Hoping Cast Won't Be Whitewashed

The live-action version of "Mulan" was announced recently and fans who are psyched about it are expecting that the movie will be surpassing the success of the recently released "Cinderella." Also, fans are hoping that the cast of the movie will not be whitewashed since it is about a Chinese woman.

Disney has been venturing on making live-action versions of their hit Disney animated film and "Mulan," the 1998 animated feature, is already given a go signal. According to Movie News Guide, the script written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek was already bought by Disney. The producers who will be working on the live-action film are Chris Bender and J.C. Spink under the production company Benderspink.

The 1998 film was first produced by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. "Mulan" follows the story of a young Chinese woman who wanted to help her father by disguising herself as a man in order to take her father's place in the military and fight in the upcoming war. Although Mulan had troubles at first regarding fitting in and concealing her true identity, she ends up being a great warrior.

Mulan was able to go through her journey with the help of her trusted friend and dragon sidekick Mushu. "Mulan" has been a success when it first aired after it grossed $304 million and even won nominations in the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

In a report by IBTimes last April, fans were excited for the film but they were concerned that the actors and actresses for the roles of the film will be whitewashed. A petition was put up online asking Disney to not make "Mulan" a victim of Hollywood whitewashing. The petition has had over 24,000 signatures but there have been no reports yet regarding the cast of the upcoming live-action movie.

Disney venturing towards live action movies stems from the success of the films "Alice In Wonderland," that earned over $1.02 billion, and "Maleficent," that was a hit and earned $758.4 million worldwide.

Aside from "Mulan," another Disney film that is said to be having a live-action version is "Winnie The Pooh." However, fans are not sure about this yet as critics are not giving their one hundred percent approval regarding this.
