"Cars 3" is still scheduled for a 2018 release date.
A video graphic seen at the Sau Paulo Disney Expo held last May 27 and 28 showed the release date of "Cars 3" on 2018. It also goes on to mention the release date of The Incredibles 2 as 2019.
News of the third installment of the Cars franchise a little over a year ago where no less than Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger made the announcement.
"We have plans for a new Cars movie and on top of that Brad Bird is already working on a great story for a new Incredibles film," Iger said.
Writing on "The Incredibles 2" just started recently, and there have been hardly any new announcements about "Cars 3". Some fans lamented on the fact that there have been no new information available for the next chapter of Cars, but this small new development kept their hopes alive that the people behind the franchise have not forgotten it.
Another thing fans should keep in mind is that the last Cars movie in 2011 made US$559.9 million for Disney and Pixar. A new installment is almost guaranteed to bring in the revenue, so don't expect them to shelf the project.
With many things happening between now and the planned release dates, "Cars 3" could happen either sooner than later. "Cars 2" hit the theaters one year ahead of the original release date, after all.
Sheriff's voice actor Michael Wallis gave fans an idea of the possible plot for "Cars 3" which takes place in Route 66 and Route 99 - two real-life decommissioned highways in the US. Wallis also served as a consultant for the franchise, being a historian who wrote a book about The Mother Road.
Majority of the cast is expected to return for "Cars 3".
Hopefully, Disney will soon make more announcements on the development of "Cars 3" in the same manner that it has for "The Incredibles 2".
