Decades after its first film hit the big screen, Top Gun 2 is in the works and will soon fly into the big screen. Tom Cruise will star in the movie as the now older Maverick. Justin Marks is currently working on the film's screenplay, and will feature drones and fifth generation fighters.
The 1986 blockbuster movie Top Gun which garnered $353,816,701 worldwide during its release, will soon have its sequel which is reportedly in the works, and the movie's sequel, Top Gun 2 will feature Tom Cruise who is set to reprise his badass Navy pilot character, Maverick.
Producer David Ellison revealed what to expect from the character, "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."
According to Ellison, 'Rewind' writer Justin Marks is currently working on the movie's screenplay, "Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today," he said.
Pertaining to the movie's concept, Ellison comments, "It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters. It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."
In 2014, another producer for the movie, Jerry Buckheimer revealed that the movie will address the question about whether or not pilots are obsolete, "Technology has changed obviously since we made the first one. So, I think we're going to take advantage of what the world is like today, you know with the drones really kind of taking over in a lot of our wars...Is the pilot obsolete? No, I don't think so...we're going to hopefully highlight both worlds," he explained.
Top Gun also starred Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt although there has been no confirmation yet whether or not they are set to reprise their roles for the upcoming sequel.
Details about Top Gun 2 are scarce as of the moment but more details are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
