The consumer release of the Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles were earlier announced to be on the latter part of this year; however, due to some circumstances, its release was moved to the first quarter of 2016.
With all the anticipation and excitement for the prototypes up to the working industrial version of the Rift, virtual reality enthusiasts have always waited for the consumer version of the goggles, reports Crossmap. While the Rift may be the pioneer in the virtual reality industry, it may not be the pioneering VR gadget in the market as a bunch of companies are having their VR products readied for public consumption such as Samsung's Gear VR and Microsoft's HoloLens. As much as it may appear to be costly, practical consumers have pushed the industry to innovate a more affordable device like the Google Cardboard, a similar device which would just cost around $19 and would instantly work with an iPhone.
With an impending competition in the market, a report via PC Authority suggests that plans lead to the idea that it would be promoted as a gaming device and reap success in the gaming market, having Edge of Nowhere and EVE Valkyrie as two of its pioneering games. Edge of Nowhere by Insomniac Games, unlike VR games, takes a third person point of view which simulates a player as a floating camera behind the game character.
However, the game itself impresses the testers as breathtaking feats were executed by the player, trying to cross bridges or grabbing ropes down to a dark cave, and as a player looks down, he himself will be terrified by the great depths below his feet. As for the demo of the space fighter simulation EVE Valkyrie, it is recommended that "doubters have to play it". Other exciting games in queue for the Oculus Rift include Chronos and Lucky's Tale.
Despite the delay, Oculus Rift managed to get the attention of technology enthusiasts and attempted a new milestone in the field of virtual reality. As United Pictures CEO Michael Doven puts it via VR Focus: "Oculus Rift is truly forward-thinking virtual reality. The display technology allows users to experience the sensation of presence. This results in a feeling of immersion and I can't wait to get my hands on one."
Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles will be released for consumption in the first quarter of 2016 with a price of something below $500. Players can be able to stream the Oculus Rift with Xbox One and Xbox 360 games with a flat screen television within the Rift world.
