Word has gotten around that Activision has rereleased the Prototype series from Radical Entertainment. Earlier this week, a remastered edition of Prototype was released very quietly in a bundle for Xbox One for $49.99. While both Prototype and Prototype 2 have been regarded as excellent sci-fi open world video games, many were questioning the move for the re-release of the game when there were no promotions whatsoever leading to the release date of the remastered edition.
The remastered Prototype: Biohazard bundle for Xbox One was released earlier this week, much to the surprise of online gaming journals like Polygon. Activision's official blog post for the release of the Biohazard Bundle states that the package comes with "full HD rendering, improved framerate, and higher resolution textures and effects".
According to a Eurogamer report the remastered edition is a disappointment. The bundle remasters both Prototype and Prototype 2 into a native 1080p output, boosting the image quality from the sub-par 720p on PS3 and Xbox 360 systems, but that's about it. Both Prototype and Prototype 2 remain as is, with no change in image rendering, texture and shadow quality included. Digital Foundry's fully detailed frame-rate test between Xbox One HD Remastered Edition versus Xbox 360 and PS3 gameplay demonstrates that the game has incosistencies in the eighth gen edition.
Kotaku's PS4 test generates much of the same result from the Xbox One frame rate testing, with PS4 frame rate dropping when there's high action gameplay. A similar experience with stuttering cutscenes when camera angles were switching were noted for the PS4 version of Prototype 2, similar to Digital Foundry's observations on the Xbox One system. Perhaps the game's underperformance in the Remastered edition was the reason behind the lacklustre effort in promoting the reimaged edition of a popular game like Prototype.
Activision will be releasing both Prototype installments in individual, remastered packages for Xbox One and PS4 on November 11.
