'Aquaman' may have been teased in the official trailer of 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice'. Several speculations also led to the question whether director James Wan could deliver a powerful and more interesting King of Atlantis in his upcoming big screen debut.
According to Cinelinx, Aquaman's imaged seemed to have dulled over the years. This could pose as a challenge to filmmakers as they try to adapt the character for a big screen audience in addition to DC loyalists. The fictional superhero first appeared in DC comics in 1941. He was also a founding member of the Justice League of America. Although he has a number of superhuman talents, he is most well-known for his ability to communicate telepathically with marine creatures.
Through the course of popular culture, the Atlantian had been depicted as a weaker, more wholesome, more affable character - often the recipient of jokes and lowly repute. For example, the 'Super Friends' animated television series which ran from the 70s to the 80s only seemed to add more insult to his injury.
DC tried to reboot the character in attempts of giving him an edgier and more commanding appeal true to the style of several other superheroes in the franchise. It was only apt that Jason Momoa was chosen to portray the title role of the King of Atlantis for James Wan's standalone film for the character.
An article by Movie Pilot commended the choice of Momoa's casting as the actor could help revive Aquaman's failing reputation of most useless DC superhero. It stated that he had the commanding and rather intimidating visual presence to begin with as seen in his most popular role as a Dothraki warrior in 'Game of Thrones'. This could blend well with the DC cinematic universe's (DCCU) signature dark tones.
It was previously reported that DCCU's 'Batman v Superman' will feature an appearance by Aquaman. According to Comicbook.com, viewers may have been treated to a first look at Momoa's character in a split-second underwater clip on the film's trailer. It was speculated that the particular hunched-over muscular lump of a man found at 2:27 could be Momoa.
'Aquaman' is a solo character film in DC's shared universe and is currently under development with Warner Bro.'s. It is scheduled to be released on July 27, 2018. James Wan of 'The Conjuring', 'Furious 7' and 'Saw' fame will be directing the film and Kurt Johnstad is set to oversee its screenplay.
