'Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur' leading man Charlie Hunnam wants to make his King Arthur rougher around the edges and more unforgettable. Director Guy Richie's take on the legendary king is said to be darker and grittier.
According to The Daily Mail, the 'Sons of Anarchy' actor is all geared up to portray the titular King Arthur in the first installment of the planned six-part series. Hunnam revealed that he needed to change up the young Arthur's stereotypical "bland and nice" image to make for a more unforgettable protagonist. He said that his character will depict a much rugged version of Arthur, who grew up and survived on the streets.
Hunnam had good things to say about working with the visionary director known for his edgy crime films. In an article by Variety, the 35-year old Englishman admitted that work on the new project always left him feeling inspired. He said that working with Richie is empowering as the director allows cast and crew alike to collaborate and be creative.
King Arthur's legend has long been told and retold in numerous English literatures as well as depicted on the big-screen in various reconstructed history and folklore. It was reported that Richie's reboot would follow the story of the mythical leader as an orphan child raised by prostitutes in 5th century London.
Richie's perspective may seem unconventional to Arthurian purists, according to Vanity Fair. The article likened this new take to the filmmaker's adaptation of a street-wise Sherlock Holmes in his 2009 film starring Robert Downey Jr. It was also reported that 'Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur' will feature creatures such as giant snakes, a monster called The Nemesis and war elephants.
'Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur' is an upcoming action-adventure fantasy film as the first in a six-part series. It is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016 and stars Hunnam, Jude Law, Eric Bana and Astrid Berges-Frisbey among others.
