"Borderlands" Movie adaptation is now in the works. Some think that finally Hollywood has picked up a good video game movie since there's been a terrible history of video games-cum-movies.
Christian Post states that Lionsgate is in talks with Gearbox software. Both companies seem to agree with a movie project, and "Borderlands" video game is ready to hit the big screen. This Gearbox's first-person shooter and role playing game has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide since 2009.
Lionsgate believes that the adaption will be a "tentpole" movie. It is also reported that Avi and Ari Arad, who produced "Spider Man" and "Iron Man," have already been attached as producers.
As of this time, what has been revealed is the storyline of the movie. According to the report, it will stick to its sci-fi setting, which is the Pandora planet. The said planet, that is filled with alien life, has been previously deserted by Atlas Corporation, a large company "that was into planet exploration and exploitation primarily in search of advanced alien technology that the corporation can use and replicate." Since Atlas Corporation left, another company has come in and has set-up a mining colony on the planet. Then the game begins with the players "who can be any of the four characters - a soldier, a hunter, a siren and a berserker."
Cheat Sheet says that this is the chance for Lionsgate to redeem the horrible history of video game movies. Every attempt of any Hollywood studio is an epic failure, from "Super Mario Brothers" to "Resident Evil" franchise. It is either the studio fell short in poor storytelling or there's too much CGI, not to mention bad acting of the main cast. However, there are other factors why video game movies didn't work in the past. One plain reason is that, studios had picked a video game "that doesn't lend itself to a normal movie storytelling structure."
Good thing Lionsgate has not been discouraged by the plight of other entertainment companies who failed in video games-cum-movies venture. It is said that Lionsgate is very positive in moving forward with this live action adaptation of video game. Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, the company's Co-Chairs for the Motion Picture Group, have released an official statement stating that "the "Borderlands" games don't pull any punches, and we'll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise."
Latino Post reports that Gearbox President Randy Pitchford has stated that having the video game adapted into a movie is a treat to its market. Fans would not be disappointed of the finish product of Lionsgate because the creative team on board with the project is topnotch.
While Gearbox and Lionsgate have been talking about the adaptation of the "Borderlands," there has no official statement yet about the details of its production, cast, movie directors, and release date. Fans of the franchise will just have to sit tight for more information of the movie.
