‘Captain Marvel’ Cast Updates: Rebecca Ferguson eyed as strongest contender for superhero role; Actress declined previous offer for female lead in ‘Gambit’

By

'Captain Marvel' may have finally found its lead actress in Rebecca Ferguson. She is tagged as the strongest contender for the titular superhero role as of the present. It was reported that she had previously declined an offer to play another Marvel female lead for 'Gambit'.

According to Heroic Hollywood, Ferguson may take on Marvel's first superheroine to have a standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was reported that although nothing has been made official as of the present, the Swedish actress may have a place in the 2018 release. Ferguson is best known for her role as Ilsa Faust in the recent 'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation' as well as her Golden Globe nominated role as Elizabeth Woodville in 'The White Queen'.

It was reported by Comic Book.com that she previously turned down a leading role as Belladonna in 'Gambit' and instead went on to star alongside Emily Blunt in the thriller 'The Girl on the Train'. It may be possible that she passed on the smaller role in hopes of gaining the title role for 'Captain Marvel' - a bigger feat in itself.

The film will follow the adventures of Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel. Throughout the comic book franchise's history, there had already been several versions of the titular superhero. The first ever Captain Marvel appeared in 1967 as the alien military officer Mar-Vell, followed by police lieutenant Monica Rambeau, followed by Genis-Vell, then Phyla-Vell, then Khn'nr, then Noh-Varr, then finally Carol Danvers.

Carol Danvers is known to be a skilled pilot and hand-to-hand combatant and she possesses the abilities of flight, super strength, and energy burst shots. According to Slash Film, the character would likely show up theoretically in the earlier film 'Guardians of the Galaxy' sequel but no announcements have been made of the issue so far. Casting the female lead may seem too early for a planned 2018 release unless Marvel wants Carol Danvers to make a cameo in 'Captain America: Civil War'.

'Captain Marvel' is an upcoming action-adventure fantasy film based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name. Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are currently developing the film's screenplay based on the works of Gene Colan and Roy Thomas. It is one of the films in the line-up for MCU's Phase Three.
