'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' newcomer Kaya Scodelario revealed more about her character Carina Smyth and how she reacted to comparisons between her and Keira Knightley. She also admitted that the upcoming film has ties to the first ever cinematic release in the franchise 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl'.
During Scodelario's interview with Digital Spy, she revealed that the producers wanted to return to the origins and mythos in the first film and explore them further. She said that doing so would tie in some loose ends and connect the storylines of the films in the series.
'Curse of the Black Pearl' was released in 2003 and introduced audiences to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swann, Geoffrey Rush's Captain Hector Barbossa, and Orlando Bloom's Will Turner.
Scodelario hinted that her character is as strong a female as Knightley's but she intends to put her own twist to it, according to Irish Examiner. Despite the comparisons made between her and the other lead actress, she remains confident of her contribution to 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'.
She said, "I respect Keira's career greatly, but we're playing two very different characters and I come from a very different world... I really love her career and think she's done great things but kind of want to put my own spin on it."
In another article IGN, the 'Maze Runner' actress revealed that Carina Smyth is an intellectual - specifically an astronomer - fighting for the right to study in a university since women weren't treated as equals during that time period. As it turns out, she is also on the hunt for the Trident of Poseidon. She then meets Jack Sparrow on the same quest and he gets them in trouble in the process.
'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' is the fifth installment in the successful Disney franchise scheduled to debut in cinemas on July 7, 2017. It is directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson. It features the original cast and some new faces including Javier Bardem, Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites.
